Female Genital Surgery
Female Genital Surgical procedures are becoming increasingly common in Spain. Mills & Mills Medical Group offers Labia Reduction & Vaginal Tightening & Reshaping (Vaginoplasty), as well as Hymenoplasty. You may have read about this or seen TV programmes on this subject. In the media it is sometimes referred to in short-hand as “designer vaginas”.
Many women are embarrassed about the look of their genital area , or they feel that sex is not as satisfying as before following multiple pregnancies for example.
The request for hymenoplasties is also increasing and we have a steady demand for this procedure, usually due to religious reasons.
These surgical procedures enable you to change the shape of your labia as well as combat vaginal relaxation, which happens when the vagina loses its tone, strength and control. The vagina becomes slack as its supporting muscles and tissues have become stretched and torn during childbirth and they do not recover.
Sometimes we can perform both a labia reduction with vaginal tightening if required, or just one or the other proceedure depending on your individual circumstances. We have a lady Gynaecologist which many women find very reassuring.
BEFORE THE PROCEDURE
It is essential that you get sound professional advice before you go ahead with genital surgery. You will have the opportunity to discuss alternatives to surgery. At Mills & Mills Medical Group we believe that all advice should be free. That’s why we offer a free private consultation with our surgeons without any obligation.
We also offer a meeting with one of our friendly patient co-ordinators who are on hand to give you information on other aspects of these procedures, such as for example, the cost of the procedure, availability in our hospitals, as well as different ways of paying for your procedure such as through a cosmetic surgery loan. Our co-ordinators are not there to give clinical advice, only our surgeon can do that, but they are there as a continual support throughout your care with Mills & Mills.
Before you attend your consultation try and write down all the questions that you would like to ask our surgeon. You may forget when you are there. It’s also a good idea to bring someone along with you for support – of course, if you want to keep the procedure totally confidential, that’s fine too.
Consultations are easy to arrange and are held regularly in Marbella and at other cities around Spain.
THE CONSULTATION
Your consultation for genital surgery will last typically between half an hour and one hour. You will have the opportunity to ask all of your questions directly to the surgeon. You may also have a choice of female or male surgeon. The surgeon will examine you and make recommendations. They will explain the benefits of the surgery, such as a more toned vagina and restored sensation during sexual intercourse. The surgeon will also discuss the risks too. Following your consultation with the surgeon, your patient co-ordinator will be able to confirm the cost and make all arrangements for you if you decide to proceed.
PRE – OPERATIVE SCREENING
Before your procedure it may be necessary to have some tests carried out. For example, you will normally be required to have a blood test. Your surgeon will advise you if other tests are required. Your patient co-ordinator will arrange these for you. It is important that we know you are fit and well for the procedure.
THE PROCEDURE
Following your consultation & assessment, your surgeon will select the right procedure to fit your needs.
Female genital reshaping is a surgical procedure that normally takes place under general anaesthetic, or local anaesthetic plus sedation. The exact nature of the operation depends on the desired result and what the surgeon recommends.
Genital Reshaping simply means reducing the size of the inner labia (the inner genital lips). To do this, the surgeon will cut away the unwanted labia tissue to make the desired shape. Alternatively, they can remove a wedge-shaped section of the labia, leaving the front intact and removing the tissue from behind. This means there is no change in the colour of the labia and makes the surgery less noticeable.

Vaginal Tightening surgery takes around an hour, but you may need to stay overnight. You will have general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic combined with sedation. The procedure is usually carried out with traditional surgical methods. The surgeon joins the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina together and shortens it, before removing the unwanted skin. This reduces excess vaginal lining and tightens vaginal muscles. The scarring is inside the vagina. This procedure is carried out either by one of our Plastic Surgeons or our lady Gynaecologist.

Hymenoplasty is performed using local anaesthetic and is a fairly simple procedure. It can be performed as a day case. There is no recuperation time in relation to time off work and as such, the procedure is very discreet.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE
You should expect some swelling and discomfort following the procedure. You will have sutures that may need to be removed if they are not dissolvable. Your surgeon will advise you about this also. Most patients notice a significant improvement in the bruising and swelling after the first two weeks but it can take some time for everything to settle completely. You will want to book about 1 to 2 weeks off work depending on the procedure, labia reduction and/or vaginal tightening.
