Tummy Tuck Surgery

This is a common operation usually performed to remove an apron of skin on the abdomen, hence the term “apronectomy”. More commonly, it is known as a Tummy Tuck.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

It is essential that you get sound professional advice before you go ahead with a tummy tuck procedure. At Mills & Mills Medical Group we believe that all advice should be free. That’s why we offer a free private consultation with our surgeons without any obligation.

We also offer a meeting with one of our friendly patient co-ordinators who are on hand to give you information on other aspects of your procedure, such as for example, the cost of the procedure, availability in our hospital, as well as different ways of paying for your procedure such as through a cosmetic surgery loan. Our co-ordinators are not there to give clinical advice, only our surgeon can do that, but they are there as a continual support throughout your care with Mills & Mills.

Before you attend for your consultation try and write down all the questions that you would like to ask our surgeon. You may forget when you are there. It’s also a good idea to bring someone along with you for support, of course, if you want to keep the procedure totally confidential, that’s fine too.

Consultations are easy to arrange and are held throughout Spain.

THE CONSULTATION

Your consultation for a tummy tuck will typically last between half an hour and one hour. At your consultation our surgeon will take a detailed medical history to help establish if you are suitable for the procedure. You will have the opportunity to ask all of your questions directly to the surgeon. He will also examine you and make his recommendations. He will explain the benefits of a tummy tuck and the risks too. Following your consultation with the surgeon, your patient co-ordinator will be able to confirm the cost and make all arrangements for you if you decide to proceed.

PRE-OPERATIVE SCREENING

Before your procedure it may be necessary to have some tests carried out. For example, a blood test will be taken. Your surgeon will advise you what tests are required. Your patient co-ordinator will arrange these for you. It is important that we know you are fit and well for the procedure.

THE PROCEDURE

You will be admitted to our hospital for up to two nights for a tummy tuck. Occasionally only one night may be required in the case of a mini tummy tuck,, again your surgeon will advise you of the likely length of stay.
The operation is performed under general anaesthetic only, which means you are asleep throughout the procedure. The operation typically takes between two and three hours to complete. A full tummy tuck will remove the excess skin and any excessive fat deposits. If the client has good muscle tone and just loose crinkly skin, it may be possible to perform a more minor procedure called a Modified Tummy Tuck. You surgeon will tell you if this is the case. Occasionally, there is more loose fat and this is removed using liposuction. Removing this excess fat will give you an optimum result. Once again, your surgeon will advise you if we need to include liposuction in your treatment plan.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

You should expect some swelling and discomfort following the procedure.  This is perfectly normal and settles down in time. You will have sutures that may need to be removed if they are not dissolvable.

It is imporant to rest after your operation and take things easy for a couple of weeks or so. You should plan to take two weeks off work. Avoid heavy lifting for up to six weeks.

After your tummy tuck, your abdomen will be flatter and with more shape.especially if a little contouring liposuction has been done in the hip area. You will be able to wear clothes that flatter your figure rather than detracting from it.
